On counting UP, not down . . . .

THREE…. TWO….. ONE:       Happy New Year!!

Now it’s time to start up a 100 new countdown clocks.  Whether it’s anticipating a happy event, or dreading a deadline, we can all be characterized by the quantity and quality of the virtual meters ticking away in our minds, driving our decisions and actions each day.

But  a countdown implies an ending, and that Time is something you lose.  As a hopeless optimist, I reject this concept by taking on a different perspective:  starting at 1 and counting UP.   Make each day a step towards a path with no visible end, where the milestones that sometimes overwhelm us are simply points along the way of a much greater journey.

I see Time as something you gain… in fact it can be captured and held within us through memories, through friendships.  I also respect Time, knowing it isn’t guaranteed and that it can be downright cruel.  But everything is relative, and all things look different from different perspectives.  Whether we live 10 years or a 100 years, humans are so infinitesimally small on the cosmic scale, we hardly show up.  On the other hand, a mayfly only lives for a day, so next to them we seem to last forever.  Which brings me to this quote from my newest favorite movie:

“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

find the joy in each day!

Embrace each new day as a fresh start, and know that when you count up, the possibilities are limitless.  Never assume you’re at the end of your road any more than you should assume you have an eternity to get there.
