What does “Aging” mean to you?

age worries

Healthy or unhealthy?  Happy or sad?  Vibrant or frail?  What you see as your future is what you will probably get… too often people assume aging means slowing down, developing illnesses, needing a wheelchair and a fistful of medications.  Is it actually possible to create an aging body that is vital, energetic and resistant to illness?  I absolutely believe that, just look around at all the older folks who can out-run, out-think and out-perform people much younger than themselves.  For me, aging is a positive:  a chance to improve, to enjoy a post-retirement life on my own terms!

So how do we make that positive vision come true?  Choose habits that support brain health, and drop the ones that don’t.  Every aspect of our lifestyles plays a part in how well our brains function:  activity, nutrition, social life, curiosity, humor, spiritual connection and sleep– it all matters, and we’re never too young or too old to start making a difference.

Of all the factors within our control, I’ve been most impressed with how much the food we eat (and don’t eat) affects our quality of life.  It’s become even more critical now that we have so much access to toxic food– often without us being aware of the dangers.  Besides excesses of saturated fat, processed sugar, and artificial ingredients, there are unseen pesticides, chemicals and missing nutrients that disrupt our hormones and defense mechanisms.  The reward for making smart food choices is a strong body, sharp mind, and longer lasting youthfulness.

I’ve made Isagenix a central part of my daily meal plan because I can rely on the ingredients for quality and content, which means I don’t have to prep and cook as much food as I would otherwise to stay healthy.  To learn more, click HERE.

Keep your vision clear, and go after it to make it happen!

Losing weight without losing muscle could be as close as your blender!

Undenatured whey protein shakes added to your daily routine will have a totally upside benefit!

The following article has great tips to keep that cute figure through the holidays:

4  Ways to Avoid Weight Gain this Holiday Season

I’m no athlete, why should I worry about protein?

IMG_6574

Why?  Because even if your favorite exercise is holding down the recliner, one thing leads to another:  Less protein means less muscle mass, means lower metabolic rate, means more fat, means lower energy level, means less physical activity… and the cycle continues downhill, ultimately leading to poor health outcomes.

We all need lean meat or plant protein to provide a quality resource for our bodies to build up quality muscle.  No surprise, the RDA is way too low:   0.8 Gm per kg, or roughly 45-75 Gm protein/ day.  That’s about half of what we actually need– women and elderly especially need to take note, since these 2 groups traditionally eat less protein than they should.

How?  Eat 3 moderate meals and 2 to 3 snacks/ day, AND include protein with each snack/ meal.  If you’re trying to lose weight on celery sticks and carrots, you’re in for an uphill battle… simply add some turkey or boiled eggs to your vegi break, and watch your results improve!   Include undenatured whey protein shakes**– this is the best protein source not only for improved absorption and usage within the body, but also because it provides large amounts of protein in a smaller volume, and is easily consumed.

What else?  Exercise… yep, no getting around the fact that light to moderate exercise every day is the secret to longer, higher quality life.  Fortunately, having better muscle tone and energy will pick up your mood and desire to get up and move more!

If you’ve ever felt like your body just won’t cooperate with your weight loss efforts, take a second look at your refrigerator before blaming your genetics.  How much processed and sugary food is there compared to fresh and preservative-free options?  Each time we eat “food” that has little nutritional value and even worse, contains poisons that disrupt the body’s ability to function smoothly, we add stress.  Instead of being angry and frustrated, shouldn’t we actually be amazed and grateful that our bodies continue to work at all?

Give your body a break.  Start incorporating clean eating habits into your daily life, and you may just find that the weight will start dropping off without you having to try so hard!

Reducing Agricultural Pesticides Has No Adverse Effects on Profits

A new study finds that farms could significantly reduce their use of pesticides without any adverse effects on production or profits.

And who is worried that decreasing the use of pesticides will hurt their profits?  Big chemical companies (Dow), of course!  They’re not as concerned about the environmental pollution to the soil, or the food, or the farmers who work so closely with all the pesticides.  bones-1294357_640

Anyone bothered by the fact that Europe has much stricter standards regarding pesticide use than the US?  In fact, we’re the #2 top pesticide consuming country in the world.  It does affect our health, and the health of our children.  What’s more, the EPA just took a step backwards regarding Chlorpyrifos.

We need to pay close attention to what’s going on, and not blindly trust our regulatory administrations to keep us safe.
